Vanderhoven em­i­grat­ed to Amer­i­ca in 1912. From 1951 to 1962, he owned the Ster­ling Sponge and Cha­mois Com­pa­ny in Grand Ra­pids, Mi­chi­gan. He played the or­gan at sev­er­al Christ­ian Re­formed church­es, in­clud­ing the Bur­ton Heights Christ­ian Re­formed Church in Grand Ra­pids (1931-42).
