Vandersloot was the grand­son of a Ger­man Re­formed Church pas­tor (who was al­so a hymn writ­er), and son of a doc­tor. His fam­i­ly moved to Clin­ton Coun­ty when Fred­er­ick was a child, and in 1889, he be­gan work­ing at a mu­sic pub­lish­er in Wil­liams­port, Penn­syl­van­ia. With­in a de­cade he had found­ed the Vandersloot Mu­sic Company, which he ran un­til sell­ing the com­pa­ny in 1930. He led the choir at the Pine Street Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal Church in Wil­liams­port for 28 years (James Black was one of the choir mem­bers). Van­der­sloot’s works in­clude:
