Marianne is the daugh­ter of Rev­er­end Jean Raath. She ob­tained her BMus de­gree at Un­i­ver­si­ty of the Or­ange Free State in 1980, as well as a Di­plo­ma in Sac­red Mu­sic. Af­ter her mar­riage, she was an or­gan­ist at var­i­ous church­es, and is still serv­ing in her lo­cal con­gre­ga­tion in the South Cape. She helped com­pile a new hymn­al for Peo­ple of the Co­ven­ant in South Af­ri­ca in 2005, dur­ing which she trans­lat­ed ex­ist­ing hymns and wrote new ones.
