James’ bro­ther was Ro­bert Wal­lace (1791-1880), pro­fess­or of the­ol­o­gy at Man­ches­ter New Coll­ege and au­thor of An­ti­trin­i­tar­i­an Bi­o­gra­phy. James served as a Un­i­tar­i­an min­is­ter at Totnes (1824), then af­ter­ward at Bright­on and Ware­ham. He was a pro­li­fic hymn writ­er, and al­so con­trib­ut­ed po­et­ic­al piec­es to the Month­ly Re­pos­i­tory.
