Wallin is probably the best known of Swedish hymnists. Son of an army sergeant, he attended the University of Uppsala and was ordained as a minister in 1806. He eventually rose to become the Archbishop of Uppsala and primate of Sweden. He served as archbishop 1837-1839, but had not moved to his residence in Uppsala before he died.

Wallin’s 1819 hymnal was used well into the 20th Century.
