A med­i­cal doc­tor, po­et and ac­tive mem­ber of the Meth­od­ist de­nom­in­a­tion, Wat­son was prom­i­nent in the To­ron­to chap­ter of the Roy­al As­tro­nom­i­cal So­ci­e­ty, and a well known sup­port­er of Ca­na­di­an li­ter­a­ture, ed­it­ing the first col­lect­ion of Ca­na­di­an li­ter­a­ture for the school sys­tem.
