Whately at­tend­ed Ori­el Coll­ege, Ox­ford (BA 1808, MA 1812, BD & DD 1825), and was or­dained an An­gli­can priest in 1814. He was Bamp­ton Lec­tur­er in 1822, be­came prin­ci­pal of St. Al­ban’s Hall, Ox­ford, in 1825, and bi­shop of Dub­lin in 1831. He was al­so a mem­ber of the Roy­al Ir­ish Acad­e­my, and the House of Lords (1833). His works in­clude:
