George was the twen­ti­eth child of mer­chant and ship own­er Sir Ro­bert Wig­ram. He was as­so­ci­ated with the Ply­mouth Breth­ren, and was a friend of John Nel­son Dar­by. His bro­ther James be­came a Vice-Chan­cel­lor, and his bro­ther Joseph was Bi­shop of Ro­ches­ter.
