Son of Rev. George Hub­bard Win­ches­ter and mem­ber of the Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal de­nom­in­a­tion, Ca­leb grad­u­at­ed from Wes­ley­an Un­i­ver­si­ty (AD 1869, MA 1872), be­came Pro­fess­or of Eng­lish Lit­er­a­ture there in 1873, and lec­tured at Am­herst, Prince­ton, Johns Hop­kins, and other un­i­ver­si­ties. He re­ceived an hon­or­a­ry Doc­tor of Lit­er­a­ture de­gree from Dick­in­son Coll­ege in 1892. He ed­it­ed the Wes­ley­an Alumn­i Re­cord, Ad­di­son’s Ro­ger de Co­ver­ley Papers, and The Athen­ae­um Press Ser­ies. He was liv­ing in Mid­dle­town, Con­nec­ti­cut, as of 1915.
