Son of Dr. John Wood­hull of Free­hold, New Jer­sey, Al­fred at­tend­ed Princ­eton Un­i­ver­si­ty and the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Penn­syl­van­ia. He prac­ticed med­i­cine in Mar­i­et­ta, Penn­syl­van­ia, and Prince­ton, New Jer­sey. His lec­tures to the U.S. In­fan­try and Cal­va­ry School were pub­lished 62 years af­ter his death as:
