Woodman assist­ed Low­ell Ma­son when Ma­son first taught in the pub­lic schools of Bos­ton, Mass­a­chu­setts. Wood­man was al­so a bro­ther-in-law of George Root, and helped Root and Ma­son with their first Nor­mal In­sti­tute in New York in 1853. Wood­man event­u­al­ly moved to Brooklyn, New York, and played the or­gan at the First Pres­by­ter­i­an Church and Pack­er Col­le­gi­ate In­sti­tute.
