Wortman grad­u­at­ed from Am­herst Coll­ege (AB 1857) and the New Bruns­wick The­o­lo­gic­al Sem­in­ary, New Jersey(1860). He pas­tored in Brook­lyn, New York; Phil­a­del­phia, Penn­syl­van­ia; Sche­nec­ta­dy, New York; Fort Plain, New York; and for ma­ny years at the Re­formed Church in Sau­ger­ties, New York. He al­so served as sec­re­tary of min­is­ter­i­al re­lief and pre­si­dent of the Gen­er­al Sy­nod of the Dutch Re­formed Church (1901). His works in­clude:
