Wright suc­ceed­ed his teach­er, John Garth, as or­gan­ist at Sedge­field church, then fol­lowed his fa­ther as or­gan­ist at Stock­ton-on-Tees Par­ish church in 1797, re­sign­ing the post in 1817. He then worked in the town as a teach­er. His works in­clude a con­cer­to for harp­si­chord or pi­a­no and small or­ches­tra, an op­er­et­ta and a set­ting of the Fifth Ode of the First Book of Hor­ace.
