Ziegler start­ed his ca­reer by work­ing at his fa­ther’s silk man­u­fac­tur­ing plant in Bos­ton, Mass­a­chu­setts. He had lit­tle for­mal mu­sic­al train­ing, but for ma­ny years was the Sun­day School su­per­in­ten­dent at High­land Church in Rox­bu­ry, where he ac­com­pa­nied the child­ren on the pi­a­no. He was al­so trea­sur­er of the Con­gre­gat­ion­al­ist Board of Min­is­ter­i­al Aid, and helped Charles Noyes ed­it the 1904 Pil­grim Hymn­al, to which he con­trib­ut­ed sev­er­al tunes.
